The Courage to Be Me
2A/2B Selfie-Self Portraits
It’s always interesting to explore the process of making art. This check and connect activity started by challenging students from 2A and 2B to take a snap shot of themselves as Second Year students on the inside and outside!
We started by looking at the moving short film called ‘Real Beauty Sketches’ produced by the brand DOVE.
After discussing the film the students were asked to take a selfie. And after the reluctant selfie photographers chose their image to work from they were asked to transform themselves into warriors.
And …. well… we might not always feel strong.... or brave..... or courageous everyday but we can definitely strive to become more resilient and one way to do this ...... is to be creative! Creativity unlocks our imagination and it heightens our sense of self-awareness. When these portraits were framed to go home by the students you could feel an electric sense of pride and an uplifting feeling of achievement in A4.
In many ways the art they generated for their warrior portrait identity shows a different side of their personality than the selfie photo. Maybe the art work shows a less guarded pose and more natural expression of character?
We had long debates about what version of the selfie-self portrait to frame! There is a second version of each piece also included in the back of frame and the students completed a reflection exercise based on the idea of the cultural or identity iceberg.
It would be really interesting to complete the same writing reflection in each year in May until they graduate to see if their answers change. Let's ... do it!
After all they are still getting to know themselves and sometimes it takes courage to ‘just be yourself’!
