Our Halloween Family
This morning we had an important St. Laurence College tradition- 'The Carving of the Pumpkin' with Bro. Fred.
We were lucky today to hear the story of the first pumpkin that Fred carved in the school. Back then lots of people carved turnips for Halloween.
A lot of people hadn't really seen the inside of a pumpkin and as the American influences for celebrating Halloween became popular Fred played a little 'trick' on the students.
The day before Fred carved the bottom of the first SLC pumpkin and put a hammer and tools inside and stuffed the hole with a sock.
In the canteen the pumpkin was carved and there was genuine astonishment when a hammer came out with all the seeds and goo!
We have never heard that story before today and it was a real treat this morning to hear Fred (standing on a chair!) retelling it!
Lots and lots of staff and students dressed up today to join the celebrations this morning.
We came together as a Halloween Family to have fun and mark the end of the term.
Enjoy your Halloween holidays and stay safe!
A big thank you to Fred for this year's pumpkin named 'Jeff!'
