Mountain Bike Maintenance and Trails Skills

Wheely Wednesdays

This group was made possible by Lisa and Karl from the LAB project (Crossare). Each week Richie from Biking.ie came into A4 to teach us about mountain bike maintenance. We learned a lot about:

- How to change a mountain bike tyre

- How to take off mountain bike wheels

- How to take out axles

- How to take off a tube and check if it is punctured

- How to tighten a headset

- How to oil a chain properly on a mountain bike

- How to index gears

- How to break a chain and put it back together

- How to set the air pressure in the suspension forks

We got the chance to ride the trials in Ticknock and Ballinastoe.

We had to learn about:

- Safety on the bike

- How to use your brakes properly with one finger

- How to stand in the attack position on the bike

- How to keep your pedals level

- How to descend over big rocks and jumps

- How to ride on a berm corner

We would like to thank Lisa and Karl from Cross care and Richie and Leo from Biking.ie

We would also like to thank Mr. Doran and Mr. Devine for setting this fun activity up for us and for Mr Coffey for letting us out of class to learn these new skills.
