Artist Karen Hickey is currently working with a group of students in second year as our J.C.S.P Artist in Residence.
Karen has a very unique style in her portraits and she is encourging the students to find their own inner artist and their own style. The students had lots of questions for Karen on her first visit and she talked about her own journey to becoming a full time artist. She talked about the artists that have inspired her and she introduced the group to the benefits of blind contour drawing. We experiemented with sharpies and promarkers and we had lots of fun drawing each other. The second session continued with lots of discussion about the 'process' of art and choosing colours, artistic style and how to concentrate on facial fetaures when creating portraits. The students all picked different celebrities to sketch. They talked about the celebs as they worked and discussed what made each face unique. They experiemented with pastels to add colour to their graphite pencil sketches. Karen will continue in January with the group and watch out for our new portrait art challenge Face 2020 coming soon.
