‘LaptopsForKids’ initiative donates digital technology to St Laurence College

The Dún Laoghaire branch of the Social Democrats has delivered ten laptops to St. Laurence College, Loughlinstown as part of its ‘LaptopsForKids’ initiative, which aims to tackle the problem of digital exclusion in the community. While the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the temporary closure of schools across the country, some students do not have access to a laptop at home.
The LaptopsForKids scheme sees local members arrange for the collection of old or unused laptops from members of the public. The volunteers then assess, wipe and update the software of donated laptops to ensure they are in good working order, before delivering them directly to schools for distribution to their students.
Accepting the donation of ten laptops, Mr. Shane FitzGerald, Principal of St Laurence College said: “I am delighted and very grateful to accept these Laptops on behalf of St Laurence College. They will enable greater access to online learning making an immediate impact on the education experience for some of our students. This will enable our school community to overcome some of the challenges that remote learning has presented. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of connectivity for everyone and these laptops will help ensure all our students can reach their full potential whether they’re studying online or in the classroom. We are most grateful for the donation and would be happy to accept any further donations into the future.”
